Can the glucose meter test strip be used multiple times and be infectious?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I got a blood sugar test today using a glucose meter, and the needle (lancet) was completely new. She opened it before me, but I was unsure about the strip. What if it has some blood stains from the nurse's hand or if it was used? Will it cause hepatitis B, hepatitis C or HIV? She pricked with a new needle and kept my finger with a dot of blood on the strip directly. I later asked the nurse if she used a new strip, and she said yes.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and am sorry for such discomfort. You are asking what if the glucose strip was used or had some blood stains from the nurse's hand. The glucose strip cannot be used again, so here in your case, the glucose strip and the glucose meter machine would have shown the value of blood after putting a drop of blood over it, so it is the new strip. Also, no nurse would use the old, unsterile glucose strip to measure the patient's glucose, and there is no chance that some blood stains from the nurse would be present on the glucose strip. This is what I think you imagine because you are stressed as you did not see the glucose strip, whether it was new or not. So it would be fresh, and you should not worry about it.

Please follow up if you have any other related queries about it.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor.

So there is no risk of hepatitis B, hepatitis C or HIV. You are right about imagination, as I have Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. The risk of the disease mentioned above is there if any actual blood drop present, any needle stick injury history is present, or glucose strip is unsterile, but in reality, there is no such history present, and you should not worry about it. Since you are imagining or getting obsession feeling due to the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), you are getting stressed. Instead, it would be best if you take measures to control OCD behavior.

I can guide you if you wish on how to tackle OCD if you have an insight about it.

Thanks.
