What could be done to manage tooth pain and gum swelling?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 20-year-old female, 5.1 feet tall, and weighs 176 pounds. I have been experiencing swollen gums with extreme pain for approximately two days; the gum swelling lasted for four days. However, I did not take any medication, except for simply rinsing my mouth with saltwater. I have experienced swollen gums before, but it went away on its own and was not that bad.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

It looks like there is a severe underlying infection, which should be treated as soon as possible. I would suggest you schedule a dental appointment soon. After an x-ray and abscess drainage (swelling), go for a root canal procedure if there is any chance of saving the tooth; otherwise, extraction is advisable.

A warm saline rinse is fine, but at this stage, your tooth needs urgent instrumentation, so go for it. Kindly share the picture of your x-ray with us so that we can guide you further regarding the line of treatment.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
