Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I started Mavenclad last month for my MS and now experiencing really strange hair changes. My hair texture has completely changed, it is becoming wiry and brittle, and I am getting these weird bald patches. The medication guide did not mention this. Is this a known side effect? Will my hair return to normal after treatment?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Hair texture changes and hair loss are not commonly highlighted in the Mavenclad medication guide but it has been reported by some people taking this medication.
Mavenclad usually works by suppressing some immune cells that can affect hair follicles which can cause hair thinning, changes in texture, or patchy hair loss.
Though it can be a side effect of this medication, it can also be due to the stress you are having regarding MS (multiple sclerosis).
For most people, medicine-related hair changes or loss like Mavenclad are temporary. Hair typically regrows and returns to its usual texture after the treatment is completed or as your body adjusts to the medication.
Inform your doctor about these side effects, and then he can decide whether to continue this medication or replace it.
You can have low iron, zinc, or biotin levels.
Do blood work, and if any of these nutrients is low, you can have supplements.
Use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners.
Avoid harsh treatments and heating, and focus on moisturizing products to reduce brittleness.
You can pull your scalp twice a week.
Do not keep oil on for more than 10 to 12 hours.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
