Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 35-year-old male. I have noticed signs of pattern hair loss, and I am keen to understand if my hectic lifestyle and regular smoking could be contributing factors. Could you shed light on the correlation between lifestyle choices and hair loss patterns? Additionally, are there specific measures or treatments that could help address both the underlying causes and manage pattern hair loss effectively?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thank you for your query.
Male pattern hair loss (MPHL) is certainly a very common condition. It has a strong genetic and hormonal cause. This is the reason, it usually starts after puberty when there is an increase in androgen hormone production. It is a heritable disorder, a concept supported by the results of familial studies. A study of 572 males (ages 16 to 91 years) evaluated in a dermatology clinic for concerns unrelated to MPHL found that participants under 30 years of age with a balding father were five times more likely to have MPHL than similarly aged participants with fathers without the condition. As far as other influencing lifestyle and psychological factors are concerned, they show a variable association. These include anxiety, sleep time, age, body mass index (BMI), disease history, physical activities, nutrition, and smoking. Dietary intake is considered to play an important role, and numerous studies have indicated the negative effect of a high-fat and sugar diet on MPHL. The association was also seen with beverages using artificial sweeteners; however, it was not observed with sweet tea and coffee, suggesting caffeine has a potential protective role. This is only one study, so the association between sugar-sweetened beverage intake and MPHL needs to be confirmed by additional studies. As far as smoking is concerned, a recent large meta-analysis was conducted. In this study, it was observed that men who have ever smoked are 1.8 times more likely to experience MPHL compared to individuals who have never smoked. Men who smoke 10 cigarettes per day are two times more likely to develop MPHL than those who smoke up to 10 cigarettes per day. Additionally, the chances of male pattern baldness worsening are 1.3 times more likely compared to males who have never smoked. Therefore, patients with male pattern baldness need to be educated about the negative effects of smoking, given the fact that this condition can have a profound negative psychological impact on those who suffer from it. However, further studies are still required. Along with a balanced diet, regular exercise, reduced smoking, and less stress, hair loss may still occur due to strong hormonal and genetic causes. Along with these measures, there are fortunately now good treatment options if you want to consider them for your MPHL. These include both topical and oral options. Please let me know the extent of your hair loss, or can send a picture if you are interested, and I can explain and prescribe further.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
