What causes hair fall and how can it be managed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am suffering from heavy hair fall. I cannot figure out the reason for the hair loss. Please suggest what I can do.

Hello,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I understand your concern.

I will explain everything about hair loss in a point-wise manner:

  1. It is very normal to have 100 to 150 hairs fall out every day. You should only consider it as hair fall if the number of hairs is more than this.
  2. Generalized hair fall in females is mostly due to stress, poor sleep, and poor nutrition.
  3. Stress alopecia is also common, where females keep their hair very tight in a certain manner, creating tension at the roots, which causes hair fall.
  4. Straightening and other procedures can also weaken the roots.
  5. Other conditions like fever, typhoid, malaria, and thyroid issues can also cause hair fall (although less commonly).

Treatment includes:

  1. Ensure you get enough sleep, eat a balanced diet with plenty of green vegetables and fruits.
  2. I suggest you take iron and multivitamins tablets for at least three months.
  3. Check your blood hemoglobin levels; if they are low, start taking iron and folic acid supplements.
  4. Check for thyroid and diabetes to rule out other potential causes.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at icliniq.

Thank you.
