Is persistent fatigue normal after hair surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had hair surgery almost a month ago. I thought I would recover faster, but I am experiencing persistent fatigue and exhaustion. I can hardly function.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Hair transplant surgery usually does not cause long-term fatigue, so one month of persistent exhaustion suggests other contributing factors. Possible causes include post-surgical recovery strain, low-grade infection or inflammation at the transplant site, poor sleep, anemia, thyroid imbalance, low vitamin D or B12, or stress.

Finasteride and Minoxidil are unlikely to directly cause severe fatigue in most people, but Finasteride can rarely be linked to low mood, reduced energy, or hormonal changes in sensitive individuals.

I suggest the following:

  1. Review your overall health with basic blood work, like CBC (complete blood count), thyroid profile, vitamin D, B12, fasting glucose, and possibly testosterone.

  2. Check for subtle infection or ongoing scalp inflammation from the procedure.

  3. Ensure adequate hydration, nutrition, and rest; post-surgery fatigue often worsens with poor protein or calorie intake.

  4. Discuss with your doctor whether to temporarily pause Finasteride to see if symptoms improve.

If your fatigue is severe enough that you cannot function, it is best to have an in-person review soon to rule out anemia, infection, or hormonal issues so you can recover fully. Include more protein in your diet and drink liquid juices frequently.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
