Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 10-year-old daughter has an infestation of lice. How can I remove the lice and eggs? Is there any medication to give her to prevent them from returning? I am worried for her.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
Your daughter’s lice problem is very common and treatable. Head lice management involves two main steps:
Kill the live lice.
Remove the eggs completely.
The treatment you can use is as follows:
Use a medicated anti-lice lotion or shampoo containing Permethrin one percent. Apply it to the scalp and hair, leave it for the recommended time, then wash it off. Repeat the same treatment after seven days to kill any newly hatched lice.
Egg removal is very important. After treatment, use a fine lice comb on wet hair every day or every two days for at least one week. This is the most effective way to remove eggs.
There is no oral medicine needed in most cases. Tablets are not usually required for children unless the infestation is very severe and not responding. Do not give any medication by mouth without a doctor’s advice.
To prevent lice from coming back, I would suggest you follow the instructions below:
Wash bedding, pillow covers, hats, and clothes in hot water.
Do not share combs, hair brushes, scarves, or caps.
Check other family members and treat if needed.
Tie her hair neatly to reduce the spread at school.
Clean combs in hot water.
If itching is severe or lice are not clearing after two treatments, then a doctor can prescribe a stronger lotion like Malathion.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
