What might be causing my recent headaches?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been having the worst headaches of my life for the past two days, and it has not gone away yet. I am supposed to be getting my period any day now. There seems to be some brown spotting and blood spotting. I am afraid that I may be in the early stages of pregnancy. My breasts have not changed, at least to my knowledge. I have been feeling a bit more tired than usual, and I have been a bit stressed and moody. I have felt slight nausea, but I am not sure whether it could be pregnancy-related or if I have not been eating enough, as I often skip breakfast and sometimes lunch, and I usually have dinner. The feeling of nausea has only just started. I have been feeling emotional for a while now, and I only just noticed the spotting today. I have had slight cramps today and a little bit yesterday. Usually, a bit of brown spotting and slight cramps are normal for me when I am about to get my period, but I am paranoid and just not sure.

Kindly help.

Hello,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I can understand your concern.

According to your history, if you had sex on the date of mid-cycle from the last menstrual date, there is a chance of pregnancy. You need to do a urine hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test to confirm it.

As you have a headache associated with menstruation, it might be migraine. You may use Flunarizine 25 mg daily for three months for the headache. Before that, please confirm the pregnancy by urine hCG test. If brown spotting is persistent, it is not a good sign of pregnancy. If you are not pregnant, the brown spotting might be due to breakthrough bleeding of menstruation. In that case, you need an ultrasound scan of the pelvis to exclude ovarian problems as well as any pregnancy.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Treatment plan

The treatment plan includes taking Flunerazine 25 mg daily for three months and Propranolol 20 mg daily for two weeks.
