What are the reasons for fluid buildup behind my eardrum?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have seen two doctors, who mentioned problems related to fluid behind my eardrum. This has been continuing for two months, and the antibiotics given were not effective. I was advised to see an ENT, but unfortunately, I could not get an appointment for another month. My hearing loss and muffled sensation are worsening. I am wondering if it is safe to wait for a month or if there is a point when I should go to the emergency room. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern. I suggest you get Pure Tone Audiometry and Impedance Audiometry done. Fluid behind the tympanic membrane can sometimes persist for a long time. If this is indeed the case, you can consider waiting and using mucolytics like N-acetylcysteine tablets and nasal decongestants. However, it is important to confirm the diagnosis through Pure Tone Audiometry and Impedance Audiometry. Sometimes, there may be underlying sensorineural hearing loss that requires prompt treatment. If it is confirmed to be fluid behind the tympanic membrane, a minor procedure called myringotomy can be considered. This procedure involves making a small incision in the tympanic membrane to drain the fluid and placing a dressing. Thank you I hope you had a pleasant experience with icliniq. I will always be available for you in case you have any queries. Thank you.
