What are the chances of recurrence of a heart attack?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 50-year-old male who suffered a heart attack last week. Firstly, what are the chances of experiencing another heart attack in the future, and how can I reduce those risks? I am concerned about my long-term prognosis. Secondly, I would like to understand the dietary restrictions and recommended foods for someone in my condition. Can you provide me with a detailed meal plan or guidelines? Lastly, I am feeling quite anxious and stressed about the whole ordeal. What coping mechanisms or therapies would you suggest to manage my mental health during this recovery period?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You have suffered a heart attack. It is time now to live a healthy life and prevent further events. With a few lifestyle changes, you will live a healthier life, and your chances of having another attack will be much lower. Apart from regularly taking all your medication on time, certain lifestyle changes enable us to live a healthy life. Starting with food, one should avoid red meat. Also, food cooked or deep fried in oil should not be taken. You can take fish and chicken as an alternative. Having fresh vegetables and fruits promotes good cholesterol and reduces bad cholesterol, hence preventing further progression of coronary artery disease. Salt should be avoided. Added salt is a big no, and salt substitutes should be encouraged. Avoid pre-processed canned foods as they contain a lot of salt. Also, walking daily for at least 20 minutes at least five days a week promotes cardiovascular health. Finally, smoking causes and accelerates heart vessel narrowing, and quitting smoke will promote a healthy life and will prevent heart attack, atrophy, and peripheral arterial disease.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
