Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My heart rate jumps from the 70s to 80s while sitting to over 130 while just standing. I feel that I will faint when I stand up. I feel lightheaded and weak. Please help.
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
The symptoms you are describing are most likely related to a condition called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). These symptoms can also be associated with severe anemia, dehydration, hypotension (due to any cause), and certain cardiac conditions. POTS is a form of dysautonomia, a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system that causes an abnormal increase in heart rate upon standing, along with symptoms like lightheadedness, weakness, and sometimes fainting. This is a benign condition that can be managed with simple measures such as good hydration, increased salt intake, gradual posture changes, compression garments, and avoiding triggers like heat, dehydration, and rapid transitions from sitting or prolonged standing. If these symptoms worsen despite these measures or interfere with your daily life, it is advisable to consult a cardiologist for laboratory work-up and advanced treatment options.
I hope this information is helpful.
Thanks.
