Can one grow taller after 18?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 18 years old male. Can I get taller? When I wake up in the morning my height is 172 centimeters and it decreases to 170 centimeters throughout the day. Why so?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I can understand your concern. Height is a multifactorial trait and is dependent on many things, such as diet, exercise, lifestyle, genetic potential, etc. The one most often ignored is the genetic potential. The natural range for a child's height is the average of the parent's height. For females, the formula is as follows

Mother's height in centimeters plus father's height in centimeters - 13 ÷ 2. Your genetic height potential will be around the number from the above formula. Medical aid can be beneficial in cases wherein the child has not yet reached the genetic potential. However, if your height is within your genetic potential, there is little to no benefit of taking supplements to increase your height; but lifestyle changes, including exercises that include jumping and stretching can help augment your height. My recommendation would be to calculate your genetic potential and then think about the next step. The age at which you reach puberty is quite within the norm. As a final piece of advice, I would like to add that part of the bones that grow to increase height fuses at around 18 to 19 years for males. So, any intervention after this point would provide no results.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
