How to increase the height at the age of 16 years?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 16-year-old male, currently five feet nine inches tall, and I am eager to maximize my growth potential. My dad stands at six feet and one inch, and despite exercising six times a week, practicing stretching routines, consuming ashwagandha, and ensuring quality sleep, I have not seen the desired increase in height. I am curious about what else I can do to enhance my height. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Height is influenced by various factors including diet, exercise, lifestyle, and genetic potential. Genetic potential, often overlooked, plays a significant role. The typical range for a child's height falls around the average of the parents' heights.

For males, the formula is as follows:

[(Mother's height in inches) + (Father's height in inches) + 13] ÷ 2

This calculation provides an estimation of your genetic height potential.

Medical assistance can be beneficial if a child has not yet reached their genetic potential. However, if your height aligns with your genetic potential, supplements might offer little to no benefit in increasing height. Instead, lifestyle adjustments, including exercises involving jumping and stretching, can aid in maximizing height.

I would recommend calculating your genetic potential before considering any further steps.

Additionally, it is important to note that certain bones critical for height growth fuse around 18-19 years for males. Thus, interventions beyond this point typically yield no results in increasing height.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
