Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 7-week-old son has had progressive swelling over the past ten days in the inner upper eyelid, causing his eye to droop. When I raise his eyebrow, it looks like it has a pit in the center and is more prominent when he cries. The upper eyelid looks puffy, and the eye itself looks fine. What could this be? I have attached pictures for your reference.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As per the photograph (the attachment has been removed to protect the patient's privacy) and your description, it is more likely the child seems to be having something called a hemangioma. It is a small bulge in the wall of a blood vessel which becomes more prominent when more blood flows through it. That is when the child is crying or straining, etc.

These anatomical defects usually get repaired on their own by the age of 8 to 10 years in about 90 to 95 percent of cases. They do not require treatment unless they are causing defects in vision or disfigurement or breathlessness, or any other significant issues (based on the location of the hemangioma).

Though not an emergency, please, get the child physically examined by a pediatrician to confirm the same.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
