What causes constant pain in the upper right side of the abdomen?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My report shows liver: known right hepatic hemangioma better demonstrated on comparison MRI and likely Riedel's lobe. I also have constant pain in my upper right side. Kidneys: left renal mass, with mild stranding or tiny vessels within and about the operative bed, without definite residual mass-like enhancement on monophasic CT. The left renal vein remains grossly patent. What does this mean?

Kindly guide.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Liver findings: The right hepatic hemangioma is better demonstrated on comparison MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).

A hepatic hemangioma is a benign (non-cancerous) mass in the liver made up of blood vessels. The report states that this was already known and was better seen on an MRI.

Likely Riedel's lobe:

Riedel’s lobe is an anatomical variation of the liver where a portion extends downward more than usual. It is not a disease but rather a normal variant in some people.

Right upper abdominal pain:

While hemangiomas are usually asymptomatic, larger ones can sometimes cause pain due to stretching of the liver capsule. If the pain is persistent or worsening, further evaluation (such as an MRI with contrast) might be needed to rule out other liver issues, like inflammation or compression of nearby structures.

Kidney findings: Left renal mass, with mild stranding or tiny vessels within and about the operative bed, without definite residual masslike enhancement on monophasic CT (computed tomography).

This suggests you had prior kidney surgery (possibly for a tumor or another condition). The report mentions a mass, but it also states that there is no definite enhancing (actively growing) residual mass, which is reassuring.

Mild stranding and tiny vessels could be due to post-surgical scarring, mild inflammation, or changes from previous treatment.

The left renal vein remains grossly patent:

The renal vein is open and not blocked, which is good because a blockage could cause kidney problems or swelling in the leg on that side.

I hope this has helped you.

Please feel free to reach out to me again if you have further queries.

Thank you.
