How can someone with spinal pain raise his hemoglobin level?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My age is 44 years, and I weigh 114.64 lbs. I am suffering from spinal pain. My hemoglobin count is 9.5 mg/dl. What medicine should I take to raise my hemoglobin?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

According to history (attachments removed for patient identity protection), your haemoglobin is 9.5 mg/dl, which is low.

Further workup needs to be done with a peripheral smear examination. If it shows microcytic hypochromic anaemia, serum ferritin is done to rule out iron deficiency anaemia. If macroovalocytes are seen, then serum B12 level should be checked.

According to the cause of anaemia, further treatment is guided.

If iron deficiency anaemia is the cause, then Orofer XT (Ferrous ascorbate and folic acid) tablet is taken daily for one to two months.

If vitamin B12 deficiency is present, then Cyanocobalamin injection is prescribed once a week or a vitamin B12 tablet can be consumed.

You have been prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs and vitamin tablets for spinal pain; continue it for the prescribed duration. If there is no improvement apart from inflammation, other spinal causes have to be ruled out. Consult with your doctor and take the medicine with their consent.

I hope your concern is solved.

Thank you.
