How to increase the hemoglobin level of a 18-month-old baby?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My daughter is of one year and six months old. When she suffered from a cold, her doctor suggested having a hemoglobin test. So it was 7.5 g/dl. The doctor has given Cpink as the supplement. Please tell me how I can increase her health. She was a very healthy kid. When she was eight months old, she crossed 30.8647 lbs. Now her weight is 27.55778 lbs. I am worried about her health.

Can you please help?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your child has anemia, which is a low hemoglobin condition.

Reticulocyte count, serum ferritin, peripheral smear test, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (if needed), and serum B12-like investigation are done to classify anemia. Peripheral smear examination should be done first to guide further investigation. Your child might have iron deficiency anemia, for which mentioned supplement is prescribed. Take it for the prescribed duration, and after two-week, reticulocyte count and hemoglobin are rechecked to see for improvement. Give your child healthy food like mashed vegetables, green leafy vegetables, and fruits. Avoid giving him outside food. If improvement (hemoglobin level) with the prescribed iron supplement is not seen, further workup will be done. Consult a pediatrician for examination and discuss all these.

I hope your concern is solved.

Thank you.
