Can frequent bruising and bleeding be a sign of hemophilia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My colleague is having some health issues. The doctor said something about hemophilia, but we are not sure what it means. She mentioned it had something to do with blood not clotting properly. Does he know how serious this is? She gets bruises easily and bleeds for a long time when she gets a cut. Is that normal with hemophilia? We are trying to understand if there is anything she can do to manage it better. Can hemophilia be treated, or is it a lifelong problem? What should she avoid to not make it worse? She is really worried about this condition.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Hemophilia is a blood disorder in which blood fails to clot. It has many types, and it mainly occurs in males and is hereditary. Sometimes it happens in later life, and the acquired treatment depends on the diagnosis, type, and severity. If it is congenital hemophilia, then yes, it is lifelong.

Acquired hemophilia is not lifelong and is managed with medicines. First, she has to get laboratory tests done for confirmation. Every bleeding and bruise is not hemophilia; there are some other causes also. So, the first thing is to properly get tested and get a diagnosis. I will need her CBC (complete blood count) and coagulation profile so that we can further proceed.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
