Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 18-year-old daughter has been having heavy bleeding episodes over the past month, and we’re starting to worry that she may have hemophilia. She’s always bruised easily, but lately the bleeding has become more frequent and severe, even from minor injuries. We’re concerned about how this might affect her daily life, especially since she’s about to start college.
What steps should we take to get an accurate diagnosis?
Are there any specific tests we should request?
What treatment options are available to help manage her symptoms and prevent complications?
We’re also trying to support her emotionally. She’s feeling very anxious about what this might mean for her future. Are there any support groups or resources for teenagers with hemophilia that could help her connect with others going through the same thing?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thanks for reaching out, and I understand your concerns completely.
It’s important to know that not all cases of bleeding are due to hemophilia. To determine the cause, we need a detailed medical history, physical examination, and specific lab tests. Hemophilia typically affects males, and it is relatively rare in females.
Can you provide more details about her bleeding?
Does it occur after injuries, or is it spontaneous, such as bleeding from the gums or heavy menstrual periods?
I recommend the following tests:
CBC (complete blood count) to check platelet count and morphology.
Prothrombin time (PT) and Fibrinogen levels to assess clotting function.
Once we have the test results, we can better determine the diagnosis and guide you through the appropriate management. There are several types of bleeding disorders, and treatment depends on the specific condition and the clotting factor levels.
Once we confirm the diagnosis, counseling will also be necessary for her emotional well-being. When available, please send over the lab reports so we can discuss the next steps.
I'm glad I could help.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with more questions.
Thank you.
