How to prevent bleeding episodes in a hemophiliac kid?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 6-year-old son has just been diagnosed with hemophilia, and I am feeling overwhelmed about how this will affect his life. How do we ensure he stays safe, especially with activities like sports or even playing with friends? What should we be doing to prevent bleeding episodes, and how do we manage them when they happen? I am also concerned about his emotional well-being. How can we explain this condition to him in a way that makes sense for his age without scaring him? What support options are available for families dealing with hemophilia?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Hemophilia is a hereditary disorder, and the affected patient has a tendency to bleed. It is a bit tough for kids as they get injured while playing. So, kids need more care and attention. Hemophilia should be tested properly. Regular factor replacement is needed to prevent bleeding episodes. Gene therapy is a new modality but is only available in trials. You can tell him that his blood is thin and does not clot easily. So, he needs to be careful. Do not tell him much right now, and be brave. Life with hemophilia is tough. Parents' life is also tough, like kids' life, but you need courage, which beats everything. Get him tested monthly for factor levels. I hope it is not in a severe form.

I hope this information helps you.

Revert in case of queries.

Regards.
