How to manage hemophilia?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 7-year-old boy keeps getting these massive bruises from barely bumping into things. Last week, he fell at the playground, and his knee swelled up like a balloon; he could not walk for days! The dentist refused to pull his loose tooth yesterday and mentioned something about "hemophilia in the family history" that my ex-wife brought up.
I do not understand what this blood condition means or why it is suddenly a major concern. His mother’s uncle apparently had some kind of bleeding problem, but what are the chances that my son has it, too?
What tests can confirm this condition? What will happen to his body if he has hemophilia?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder. Certain clotting factors help in the normal clotting process. In hemophilia, these factors are present in reduced quantities, so the blood does not clot properly, leading to excessive bleeding compared to normal individuals.
It seems your son may have hemophilia. It is a genetic condition. If the maternal uncle has it, then your child can definitely have it as well because the mother may carry the gene and pass it on to the son.
I suggest you follow these tests:
- Coagulation profile.
- Clotting factor assays.
The knee swelling your son experienced is likely due to bleeding into the knee joint, a common symptom in hemophilia.
Hemophilia can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the level of clotting factors in the body. Please get your son tested as soon as possible.
I hope you found this helpful.
Thank you.
