Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had unprotected sex with a stranger two weeks ago. I came to know he died, and someone said he was AIDS positive. I am 28 and afraid that I am HIV positive now. Is it too late to prevent it? What should I do? Should I get tested or start treatment? What are the chances I might have got it? Is there a morning-after pill for HIV?
I am anxious and cannot tell my family or friends. Please help me figure out what to do next. Is there any hope for me if I am positive?
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I am really sorry to hear that you are feeling this way. It is entirely understandable to feel scared after such a distressing situation.
The first and most crucial step is to get tested for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).
Since it has been two weeks since your exposure, you can have an HIV test, but keep in mind that some tests may not detect the virus that early. A negative result now might not be definitive, so you should plan to have a follow-up test in four to six weeks for more accurate results.
You mentioned the possibility of spreading HIV to others, which is understandably frightening. However, if you are not HIV positive, you cannot transmit the virus.
If you do find out that you are HIV positive, remember that many people with HIV lead long, healthy lives with effective treatment. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) can help manage the virus, allowing you to maintain your health and significantly reduce the risk of transmission to others.
Additionally, consider seeking emotional support.
Talking to a mental health professional or joining a support group can be beneficial during this overwhelming time.
You are not alone, and resources are available to help you navigate this situation.
Prioritize your health and well-being by getting tested and seeking your needed support.
I hope this helps.
You can reach out to us again if you have further questions.
Thank you.
