How to manage the high viral load of HIV?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

After my vacation, the HIV diagnosis hit me like a truck. I tested positive three months after my friend's bachelor party. The viral load is extremely high, and the CD4 count is falling. I have already lost 30 pounds and have odd skin rashes all over. I am afraid to inform my girlfriend; that our wedding is in two months. Every night, my night sweats soak through three shirts. My brain feels like it is in a fog, making it difficult to concentrate at work. The medications make me so sick, but doctors insist I have to take them or else.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

You can start antiretroviral therapy (ART) to control the virus, rebuild your immune system, and prevent progression to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). Though side effects can be tough initially, you can adapt to it over time and switch to a better-tolerated regimen.

Telling your fiancée is understandably daunting but necessary. Open, honest communication allows you to move forward together and ensures she has the opportunity to make informed decisions about her health. Many couples successfully navigate HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) together, and treatment significantly reduces the risk of transmission.

For emotional support, consider reaching out to a counselor or support group. This can help you process your diagnosis, manage stress, and regain focus. As for the wedding, prioritize your health, and do not hesitate to adjust plans if needed. With proper treatment and support, you can live a long, fulfilling life while managing HIV.

I hope this helps.

Regards.
