Patient's Query
Hi doctor.
I need some clarification on human metapneumovirus (HMPV). My mother is 57 years old and was recently diagnosed with it. She has had a bad cough for days, and her fever comes and goes. She also keeps feeling short of breath. She already has some lung issues from years of smoking, so I am worried that this could turn into pneumonia. How often does that happen with HMPV? She has been drinking a lot of tea and soups, but is there anything specific she should be avoiding? She has been eating less, and I do not want her to get weaker. Someone told me that dairy makes mucus worse—is that true? I would like to know what is best to give her, as she hates hospitals and refuses to go unless absolutely necessary.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) can be more severe in people with underlying lung conditions. Healthy adults usually recover in one to two weeks without complications, but people with lung disease (such as smokers or those with COPD) are at a higher risk of pneumonia.
If her shortness of breath is worsening, her cough is deepening, or her fever keeps returning, pneumonia could be developing. Since she is refusing to go to the hospital unless absolutely necessary, here are some clear red flags where you should push for urgent care or an emergency room visit:
Severe shortness of breath, even at rest.
Bluish lips or fingertips.
High fever (102°F (Fahrenheit) or higher) for more than three days, or fever that returns after going away.
Confusion or unusual drowsiness.
Foods that help in recovery and strengthen the lungs:
Protein-rich foods – Chicken, eggs, fish, and tofu help prevent muscle loss.
Soups and broths – Help maintain hydration.
Soft fruits and vegetables – Steamed or pureed for easy digestion.
Honey and ginger tea – Acts as a natural anti-inflammatory.
Probiotics like yogurt – help for immunity.
The idea that dairy increases mucus is a myth, but if she feels it worsens her symptoms, she can reduce it. Processed and sugary foods can weaken immunity, so it is best to avoid them. Excessive caffeine intake can be dehydrating, so one to two cups per day is sufficient. If she is having difficulty breathing, excess salt can lead to fluid retention in the lungs, so salty foods should be avoided.
At-home care to make her comfortable:
Keep her hydrated.
Encourage small, frequent meals.
Ensure she completely stops smoking.
Use a humidifier.
Have her do steam inhalation three to four times daily.
Monitor her breathing closely. If it worsens, an emergency room visit is non-negotiable.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
