How can I manage HMPV with diabetes?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor.

I am a 55-year-old male with type 2 diabetes, and I was recently diagnosed with human metapneumovirus (HMPV) after experiencing a cough, fever, and body aches for almost a week. I thought I was improving, but now I feel extremely exhausted, and my cough has become more productive. I have also started feeling mild chest pain when I breathe deeply. My blood sugar levels have been running higher than normal since I became sick. Should I be concerned about a bacterial infection or pneumonia? Additionally, I help take care of my elderly mother, who has heart disease. How long should I avoid close contact with her?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

An HMPV infection is similar to any other flu. Since you have diabetes, there is a risk of pneumonia.

I recommend that you get a chest X-ray done.

I advise you to do the following:

Take a course of antibiotics and antitussives for symptom relief.

Chest pain might be due to excessive coughing.

Use an oximeter to monitor your vital signs.

There is a risk of transmitting this infection to the elderly, so maintaining distance is a good precaution.

The differential diagnosis include

Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI).

Lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI).

I advise you to do the following:

Antibiotics.

Antitussives.

Mucolytics.

The preventive measures include:

Avoid contact with elderly and pediatric individuals.

Wear a mask.

Practice regular hand washing.

Differential diagnosis

-URTI

-LRTI

Treatment plan

_antibiotics - antitussives - mucolytics
