Do I need to repeat the HSV test if I have no symptoms and tested negative after 45 days of exposure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I tested for HSV-1 and HSV-2, serology IgM and IgG after 45 days of possible exposure, and the result is negative. Now I am in the tenth week, and I have had no symptoms so far.

  1. Can the 45th-day test be conclusive?
  2. Do I need to repeat the test?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Yes, that is almost conclusive. You can remain relaxed. I do not think there is any need to go for more tests. The sensitivity of the test is about 99%, and since you have no symptoms, you are safe.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for your reply.

  1. Is it conclusive because I had no symptoms, or is the test accurate?
  2. I got a dry, sore throat followed by a running nose on the 11th day after the exposure, and I had it for three to five days. Can this be an HSV symptom?
  3. Are my tests still conclusive?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

No, I do not think so. These are not symptoms of HSV (herpes simplex virus). The incubation period of the virus is less. If you got an infection, you would have developed the symptoms by now.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
