Is it necessary to do a laparoscopy for hydrosalpinx?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My daughter is scheduled for a laparoscopy next week, and we would like to seek a second opinion from an expert to determine if the surgery is truly necessary or if it can be postponed. We are wondering if the condition might heal on its own and return to normal over time, as she is not currently experiencing any pain, and her condition appears stable. She is currently taking Dydrogesterone. Please review the attached MRI scan and recent ultrasound reports for your assessment. We appreciate your help and kind advice.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I went through the reports (attachments are removed to protect the patient’s identity). Please understand that the reports show swollen tubes, which are known as hydrosalpinx. The dilatation and tortuous nature facilitates twisting, then decreasing the blood supply and complicating things further. I know it is hard for you to accept and follow the situation for your daughter at this tender age, but please understand laparoscopy is the best method for her currently. This will prevent complications beforehand and control them on time.

If you ask about the best option from my side, definitely you should go for a laparoscopy, especially if symptoms like pain, vomiting, or excessive periods are there, then maybe you will need to plan a laparoscopy before.

Hope I solved your query.

Do let me know if you have any questions.

Take care.
