Does practicing genital hygiene aid in preventing infections after a hymen rupture?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am not yet 18. I have been in a relationship with my boyfriend for a year, and a few days ago he fingered me. We have engaged in similar activities before, but not actual sex because I have a septate hymen. However, this time I started bleeding excessively and experienced cramping afterwards. I also had hot flashes that night, and since then, I have been experiencing occasional stomach aches and cramps. When I say bleeding, I mean there was blood all over me, dripping down my legs, and it even stained some of the floor. I am taking a medication called Norethindrone lexapro (birth control and to stop my period due to a suspected case of endometriosis), but I know that the bleeding and cramping are not related to the medication because I have not missed any doses or experienced this before. It is strange that this has happened just after that incident. The bleeding only lasted until the next day (it was light, not heavy or excessive), and then I was fine in terms of bleeding. What could this be? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern. According to your description, the bleeding could be due to a tear in your hymen. The hymen is a ring-like structure located in the lower part of the vagina, and it can tear during fingering or intercourse. Additionally, at your age, endometriosis is very rare, so you should not take any hormonal pills without confirming the diagnosis and consulting with a gynecologist. Since you mentioned that the bleeding has stopped, there is no need to worry. However, it is important to take care to prevent any potential infections. You should keep the area clean and dry, change your undergarments twice a day, and wash your genital area with gentle cleansers.

Thank you for consulting with me.
