I have had sex before. Is hymenoplasty required and safe?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have engaged in sexual activity before, but now I am getting married, and I am concerned. I want to get hymenoplasty done, but I am scared about the privacy, risks, and whether it will even work. What if I spend a lot of money and it does not work? What if it leaves a scar? And what if I get an infection? And how will I cover the costs?

Please help me in this regard. I cannot go to anyone in person because I am scared for my safety and privacy.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It is completely understandable that you feel anxious about this. Many women share the same concerns about privacy, safety, and outcomes when considering hymenoplasty.

Hymenoplasty is a minor surgical procedure done to reconstruct the hymen, and when performed by a qualified gynecologist in a reputable clinic, it is generally safe and discreet. Complications such as visible scarring, infection, or the surgery “not working” are uncommon if it is done properly, but as with any surgery, risks can never be zero.

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, and most women recover within a couple of weeks with minimal discomfort. In terms of privacy, clinics that offer this service typically keep it confidential.

However, it is very important to choose a licensed and trustworthy doctor rather than an unregulated setup, as that is where the risk of complications and lack of accountability is highest.

Costs can vary. It may also help to think carefully about why you want the procedure, whether it is for personal reasons or due to outside pressure, since the hymen is not a reliable indicator of virginity.

If you decide to go ahead, prioritize finding a qualified gynecologist who can explain the risks, costs, and aftercare clearly, while assuring you of confidentiality.

You are not alone in these concerns, and making an informed, safe choice is the best way to protect both your health and your peace of mind.

I hope this has helped you.

Please feel free to reach out to me again if you have further queries.

Thank you.

Important Considerations

Always choose a licensed and trustworthy doctor for any surgical procedure. Unregulated setups carry higher risks of complications and lack of accountability. Medications should be taken after consulting a physician. The dosages will be prescribed by the physician. Do not alter, start, or stop medications without consulting a healthcare professional.

This information is based on general medical guidance. It is not a substitute for professional medical advice; consult a qualified clinician.

Always consult a doctor before taking medication; self-medication carries serious health risks. Take exact prescribed doses, and never start, change, or stop treatment without medical supervision.
