What are the causes of hyperpigmentation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 18 years old, and I use sunscreen and aloe vera gel on my face. I have some skin problems that really disturb my looks.

My problems are:

  1. Hyperpigmentation, pigmentation, tanning.

  2. Wrinkles (dark) and fine lines.

  3. Old pimple marks on my cheeks, which are also dark.

  4. Dark circles and skin around circles are dark.

I used to have light skin when I was young. As I grew, my skin started to have problems. When I get back home from school in the afternoon, my face looks shiny and a little oily. I probably have combination skin.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am very sorry about your medical condition and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body system. But do not worry, I am here to take care of you. Regarding your symptoms, I believe you have developed a hyperpigmented skin lesion with acne vulgaris possibly due to repeated sun exposure to sunlight. Please use the following:

  1. Tablet Minocycline 500 milligrams three times a day for one week.

  2. Apply topical 2 percent Resorcinol once daily (Resinol), or topical 0.1 percent Tretinoin (Retin-A) twice a day or 20% Azelaic acid once daily (Azelax) or 5 percent Dapsone gel (Aczone) once daily for one month.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
