Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have been really worried about my friend lately. Ever since his brain tumor surgery that was done a couple of years ago, he has been gaining a lot of weight. Despite healthy eating and regular exercise, the weight just keeps piling on. He is always hungry, and it does not feel like normal growing-up stuff. It is almost as if his body does not know when to stop. I came across something called hypothalamic obesity online and wondered if that could be what is happening with him. Is that even a thing after brain surgery? And if it is, what can we do about it? Should we be looking into more tests or consult a specialist for this?
Kindly help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I can understand your concern.
Hypothalamic obesity is a real condition, and it can develop after damage to the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that plays a critical role in regulating hunger, energy balance, and metabolism. This type of damage can sometimes occur after brain surgeries.
In hypothalamic obesity, the body’s ability to regulate hunger and satiety (feeling full) becomes impaired. This can lead to persistent hunger, rapid weight gain, and difficulty losing weight despite diet and exercise. It must get physically examined by an endocrinologist, they will ask you to take blood tests to check hormone levels.
