Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Why do I have a high resting heart rate but have just been diagnosed with hypothyroidism?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
A high resting heart rate can be a symptom of both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. In Hashimoto's disease (a type of hypothyroidism), thyroid hormone levels can affect the cardiovascular system, sometimes leading to heart-related symptoms, including an elevated resting heart rate. While an underactive thyroid typically slows metabolism and heart rate, the heart may compensate by beating faster in some cases.
Other factors like stress, caffeine intake, or certain medications could also contribute to a high resting heart rate. If you are hesitant to take levothyroxine, it is important to know that this medication replaces the deficient thyroid hormone and can help relieve symptoms of hypothyroidism, including high heart rate. Discuss your concerns with your healthcare provider to explore appropriate treatment options.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
