What are the chances of getting tetanus after not cleaning a wound in a patient with ITP?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Today, I got an open wound from a rusted metal in one of my cupboards. The wound was not very deep, but as I have ITP (immune thrombocytopenic purpura), I did not clean it at first and swiped the blood with my finger and pressed hard so that the blood clots. As I told you above, my condition tends me to have excessive bleeding. After the blood stopped, I washed my wound with a diluted antiseptic liquid after ten minutes. I got my last tetanus shot nine months ago. Should I get one again? But, I am worried as I am currently on Mycophenolate Mofetil MMF due to my ITP. So, is what I did during the injury correct? Am I at risk of infection due to not cleaning the wound firsthand, and should I take tetanus or not? And if yes, can I take it with MMF?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I thoroughly read your query and understand your concern.

It is always important to clean any wound as soon as possible to reduce the risk of infection. Therefore, it would have been ideal to clean the wound immediately rather than wait. However, since you eventually cleaned it with an antiseptic liquid, that is a good step in preventing infection. As for the tetanus shot, generally, it is recommended to get a tetanus booster every ten years. Since you received your last tetanus shot nine months ago, it might still be effective. Antibiotics, such as Amoxicillin, should be started. Regarding taking a tetanus shot with MMF (Mycophenolate Mofetil), you can take your shot. It does not interfere with anything.

Get well soon.

Regards.
