Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My son is 14 weeks old now. When he was 12 weeks old, I noticed some strange movements in him. It was like infantile spasms. I consulted a doctor with a video taken. I took him along with me. The doctor told me that it looks normal. Still, I see some strange movements. I am not able to say whether they are regular baby movements or not. They look suspicious to me. So I showed a couple of more videos to the doctor during his check-ups, and the doctor disagrees and refuses to get an electroencephalogram (EEG). I am worried. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com. I have reviewed your uploaded video carefully (attachment removed to protect patient identity). These movements do not look like spasms. They are related to a normal reflex of the children. From the other hand, spasms also cause extension in the neck. It is not seen in the video. You should know that having epileptic seizures along with infantile spasms are a part of a progressive encephalopathy, and they have a progressive worsening. If these movements become frequent, I would recommend consulting a neuropediatrician and performing EEG (electroencephalography).

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I am very concerned because infantile spasms have a better chance to get improved with medication within four to six weeks. Do I need an electroencephalography (EEG) to be done or can I wait?

Answered by Dr. Aida Abaz Quka

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com. As I explained above, these videos do not show typical spasms. From the other hand, as it is a progressive disorder, it will get worse within a few weeks. So, if it is difficult to perform an electroencephalography (EEG), I would recommend waiting.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
