Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My mom has inflammatory breast cancer, and her symptoms appeared suddenly red, swollen, and painful breasts with skin thickening. Her mammogram and ultrasound showed diffuse changes, and a PET scan suggests possible lymph node involvement. How aggressive is this type, and what are her treatment options? She is scared about losing her breast and the cancer spreading fast. Can her breast be preserved? What’s the typical progression for this type of cancer?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is an aggressive form of breast cancer, often classified as stage III or higher due to rapid progression and skin involvement, such as redness, swelling, and peau d'orange (skin resembling an orange peel). Diagnosis requires a punch biopsy for confirmation, along with PET-CT scans to check for distant metastases. Treatment typically begins with neoadjuvant chemotherapy to shrink the tumor, followed by a modified radical mastectomy and adjuvant radiotherapy. Despite aggressive treatment, the five-year survival rate for IBC is around 30-40 percent.
If your mother has a BRCA2 mutation, she may benefit from risk-reducing options like a bilateral mastectomy to prevent recurrence. For family members, genetic screening is essential to detect mutations early. Regular clinical breast exams every 3-6 months, annual mammograms, and discussions about chemoprevention with Tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors can significantly reduce risks. A multidisciplinary team, including oncologists and genetic counselors, can help tailor the best approach for her and your family.
