This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I scratched my belly on a horse saddle and want an expert suggestion. I have also attached a photo. I am worried about it, and I am not sure if it is life-threatening. My mom is away.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I am sorry to hear about your injury. Thanks for sharing the photo (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity), you are doing the right thing by checking.

Here’s what I see and my advice:

The scratch appears red and raised, with possible irritation. There is a small dark area near the scratch that could be a scab, bruise, or early sign of infection. Some surrounding skin looks slightly yellowish, which may be bruising or healing tissue, or possibly mild infection or inflammation.

The good news is, this does not look life-threatening at the moment. But be cautious if you notice any of the following:

  1. Increased redness or red streaks spreading outward.

  2. Swelling, warmth, or pus.

  3. Fever, chills, or feeling unwell.

  4. The wound becomes more painful or changes color quickly.

What to do right now:

  1. Gently wash the area with warm water and mild soap.

  2. Pat it dry with a clean towel, do not rub.

  3. Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin).

  4. Cover it with a clean, breathable bandage.

  5. Avoid tight clothing that rubs against it (like the waistband or elastic).

You should seek medical care as soon as you can if you are seeing worsening symptoms or if that dark spot gets larger or opens up. If you feel feverish or the area starts to swell noticeably.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
