Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a few doubts about preventing insect bites in children. Here are my questions:

1. How can parents prevent insect bites and stings on their children this summer?

2. What can a parent do at home to treat an insect bite or sting?

3. What are the signs of an allergic reaction related to insect bites or stings?

4. When should a child with an insect bite or sting be seen by a medical professional?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your concern is regarding insect bite.

Hereby, I am giving you suggestions regarding your questions:

1. To prevent insect bites, the skin should be covered well with clothes. Insect repellent available commercially can be used. Net can be fit into a house. Try to avoid visiting farms, or when you visit take care of not walking on bare feet and wear shoes.

2. At home, when an insect bite occurs, apply an ice pack for soothing. An antihistaminic drug can be prescribed. If you see a sting at the bitten site, then remove the sting. Wash the affected area with soap and water. Immediately after the bite, the wound can be cleaned with an antiseptic solution. If inflammation is severe, then topical steroids should be prescribed.

3. When an insect bite occurs, inflammatory mediators are released, like histamine, serotonin, etc. So, the affected site becomes red, warm, painful, and swollen. These all are signs of inflammation discovered by the census.

4. This is a very important question. You should see a doctor if no improvement is seen in three to four days. If fever and extreme pain are present, then consult a doctor. If an insect bite shows signs of infection like swollen lymph nodes, pus discharge, etc. a consult with a doctor is needed.

Hope I have solved your query.

Take care.
