Do multiple intramural fibroids interfere with conception?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have two children, both conceived naturally, although a scan showed I have intramural fibroids. Can I still conceive at 40 with multiple intramural fibroids?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Yes, it is possible to conceive at 40 with multiple intramural fibroids, though there are some factors to consider. The fact that you have had two natural pregnancies is a positive sign of your fertility. However, fibroids can sometimes impact conception and pregnancy, depending on their size, location, and number.

How fibroids can affect pregnancy at 40:

Ovulation and conception: If fibroids distort the uterus or block the fallopian tubes, it may make it harder for sperm to reach the egg.

Implantation issues: Large fibroids within the uterine wall (intramural fibroids) may reduce space for implantation or affect blood flow to the embryo.

Pregnancy complications: Fibroids may increase the risk of miscarriage, preterm labor, or placental problems, and there is a higher likelihood of needing a C-section.

Left-side pain: Pain on the left side could be due to fibroid degeneration, where the fibroid outgrows its blood supply.

What you can do:

  1. Consult a gynecologist: A fertility check-up can help determine how the fibroids are affecting your uterus and whether any treatment is needed.

  2. Monitor fibroid size: If the fibroids are large, your doctor might suggest medications or surgery (like myomectomy) before attempting pregnancy.

  3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Manage stress, eat a balanced diet, and take prenatal vitamins like folic acid if you are planning to conceive.

Since you have conceived naturally before, there is still a good chance you can get pregnant. However, it is a good idea to discuss your options with your doctor. Would you like more information on natural ways to manage fibroids or fertility treatments if needed?

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
