I have poor sleep and get tired easily. Why does this happen?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 20-year-old and my weight is 150 pounds. I get tired very quickly and constantly feel fatigued. My hands and legs often ache, and I only manage to get very little sleep.

In addition, I frequently experience low-grade fevers. I have also been having stomach pain for the last few months. I got an ultrasound done on my upper right side, but the reports came back normal; however, it still hurts.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Based on your symptoms of persistent fatigue, body aches, poor sleep, frequent low-grade fevers, and ongoing stomach pain despite a normal ultrasound, it is important to proceed with a comprehensive evaluation.

Common causes to consider include vitamin or mineral deficiencies, such as iron, vitamin D, or vitamin B12, as well as thyroid dysfunction or chronic infections. Stress-related conditions and anxiety can also contribute to both physical discomfort and disturbances in sleep.

Your stomach pain could be related to gastritis, acid reflux, or functional dyspepsia, especially if it worsens with stress or irregular eating habits. I recommend obtaining a full blood workup, including:

  1. Complete blood count.

  2. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

  3. C-reactive protein.

  4. Liver function tests.

  5. Renal (kidney)function tests.

  6. Thyroid profile.

  7. Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and iron studies.

  8. Stool tests if gastrointestinal symptoms continue.

These investigations will help identify any underlying medical issues that must be addressed. In the meantime, you can take several practical steps, such as:

  1. Eat a balanced diet and stay well-hydrated.

  2. Include light daily exercise to improve energy and sleep quality.

  3. Avoid excess caffeine, late-night screen time, and spicy or oily food.

  4. For symptom relief, consider a short course of a proton pump inhibitor (for example, Omeprazole) while awaiting test results.

Please follow up soon with these investigations.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
