Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My son is 7 years old and we got a few tests done five months ago. I have attached the test results. His WBC is normal in count. Red cells are microcytic hypochromic with mild anisocytosis, platelets are adequate in the smear. Now my question is what is the reason for his iron deficiency anemia?
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Oral iron therapy is not effective if the absorption of iron from the intestine is affected by enteritis, sprue, hookworm-like parasite infestation, etc. So investigate with stool routine micro examination and occult blood. In anemia of chronic disease, serum ferritin is usually normal to higher in range. If any foci of chronic inflammation or infection are present then it might be the reason. Continue prescribed syrup for anemia.
Consult a pediatrician for examination and discuss all these.
I hope it helps.
