What causes irregular periods with light bleeding?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got my period two months ago. After that, I had a period with very little bleeding about a month later. Then yesterday, I got my period again, but with only light bleeding. I have taken Medroxyprogesterone (3 doses) to help get my period. I am very worried about my irregular periods. Can you please help me with increasing my menstrual blood flow?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing irregular periods with very light bleeding. This may indicate conditions such as oligomenorrhea (infrequent periods) or hypomenorrhea (scanty menstrual flow). Here is a clear breakdown to help guide you:

Possible causes of light or irregular periods:

  1. Hormonal imbalances (especially low estrogen or high prolactin).
  2. Stress, significant weight loss, or obesity.
  3. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
  4. Thyroid disorders.
  5. Thin endometrial lining, which can reduce menstrual flow.
  6. Post-progestin withdrawal bleeding (common after taking Medroxyprogesterone).

Steps to increase menstrual blood flow naturally:

  1. Track your cycle: Use a period tracking app or a calendar to monitor your cycle's frequency, duration, and flow.
  2. Supportive nutrition: Eat iron-rich foods like spinach, beets, dates, and pomegranates. Include healthy fats such as avocados, nuts, and flaxseeds to support hormone balance. Stay well-hydrated, drink plenty of water daily.
  3. Herbal remedies (only after consulting a healthcare provider): Shatavari or Ashwagandha (used in Ayurveda for hormonal balance). Vitex (chasteberry) to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Ginger tea may promote better uterine blood flow.
  4. Lifestyle adjustments: Manage stress through yoga, meditation, or relaxation techniques. Avoid excessive physical activity or sudden weight changes.

Medical steps to consider:

  1. Blood tests (ideally done on day two or three of your cycle): These include thyroid-stimulating hormone (to check thyroid function), prolactin, LH (luteinizing hormone), FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), estrogen, progesterone, fasting blood sugar, and insulin levels (to assess for insulin resistance).
  2. Pelvic ultrasound: To evaluate your uterine lining and check for PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) or other anatomical concerns.
  3. Gynecologist consultation: Since you required Medroxyprogesterone to induce bleeding, this may indicate anovulation or low natural progesterone levels, which need further assessment.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
