Can stress cause irregularities in menstrual cycles?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an 18-year-old girl who has been experiencing a light to medium flow of brown discharge (sometimes red, but rarely) for around nine to 14 days. I likely have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) since my mother has it and I have always had irregular periods, but I am not sure. My last period was four months ago. I am not experiencing any other symptoms besides the brown discharge, but it is very worrying, especially since I am already dealing with a lot of stress from exams right now.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Regarding your symptoms, I do not think you have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). At 18 years old, it is common for your menstrual cycles to be irregular, especially in the early years. I strongly believe your irregular menses may be due to stress. Please do a hormone profile test and let me know the results. Additionally, please take tablet Medroxyprogesterone 10 mg, one tablet daily for one month. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent. If you notice a mass around your pelvic area, please do a pelvic scan and share the results with me.

I hope this helps. Schedule another appointment for a follow-up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

Thanks for using icliniq, and have a nice day.
