How can a woman manage IBS-C at age 32?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 32 year old female and have been suffering from severe constipation and bloating for the last 6 months. Sometimes I only have a bowel movement every three to four days and it is very hard and difficult to pass.
My doctor said it could be IBS with constipation. Is IBS with constipation a long-term condition that needs lifelong management? Are fiber supplements safe to take daily for this problem? Are there certain foods I should avoid, such as dairy or gluten, to help control symptoms?
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
In this condition, tests show that the intestine is normal, but bowel movements become slower and more sensitive and the stools become hard, bloated, and cause abdominal discomfort. Many patients have a bowel movement only 2 or 3 times a week and feel better after each stool.
IBS-C is typically a chronic functional disorder, but the severity can vary over time. Lots of people can control their symptoms well with lifestyle changes and medication when needed. It does not harm the intestine or increase the cancer risk.
Increasing fibre intake can often help. Most fibre supplements, such as psyllium husk, are considered safe for daily use. The trick is to slowly increase your fibre intake and drink plenty of water so that your stools become softer without making the bloating worse.
Dietary triggers are different for each person. Some patients suffer from the effects of lactose intolerance and find that they bloat after dairy products, while others may be sensitive to some fermentable carbohydrates in foods such as onions, beans or wheat. Instead of automatically avoiding gluten or dairy, it is usually better to identify personal triggers with a food diary or a structured diet plan such as a low-FODMAP (fermentable short-chain carbohydrates, oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) approach.
Regular exercise, drinking lots of water and eating at regular times are also helpful in stimulating bowel movement. If constipation continues, doctors may recommend medications such as polyethylene glycol to soften stool and increase bowel frequency.
A combination of dietary changes, fibre and lifestyle measures can help many IBS-C patients achieve better regularity of the bowel and significant relief from bloating and discomfort.
I hope I have answered your question.
