How to manage extreme vaginal itching?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have extreme vaginal itching. My vagina has been so itchy for the past few weeks, which tends to make me wake up at night. Please help.
Thanks.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Based on your symptoms of intense vaginal itching for a few weeks, worse at night, the most common causes at your age are vaginal yeast infection (very common; itching is often severe and worse at night), allergic or irritant vulvitis (reaction to soaps, pads, tight clothing), and, less commonly, bacterial imbalance or parasitic infection.
Antihistamines can reduce the itching sensation but will not treat the underlying cause if there is an infection. At this stage, the most likely cause is a vaginal fungal (yeast) infection.
I suggest the following for you:
-
Keep the genital area dry and clean.
-
Avoid scented soaps, vaginal washes, sprays, or douching. Wear loose, breathable cotton underwear.
-
Avoid scratching as it worsens irritation.
-
Medical management usually required is local antifungal vaginal treatment (cream or pessary).
-
Sometimes combined with an external antifungal cream for the vulval area. If there is thick, white discharge, redness, swelling, or burning during urination, this further supports a diagnosis of a yeast infection.
Please let me know:-
-
Is there any vaginal discharge? If yes, what is the color and consistency?
-
Do you have any foul smell?
-
Do you have any pain or burning while urinating?
-
Are you sexually active?
Based on these details, I can guide you more accurately on the next step.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
