I am 24. Why am I having itching along with stretch marks?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 24-year-old female experiencing severe itching along with an increasing number of stretch marks. The itching has become more intense over time, and the stretch marks are appearing more frequently and spreading.
My height is 5 feet 2 inches, and I weigh 154 pounds. I am concerned about these symptoms and would like to understand the underlying cause.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
I would want to assess your symptoms carefully, as severe itching accompanied by an increasing number of stretch marks (striae) may indicate more than just a surface-level skin issue.
Stretch marks typically result from rapid skin stretching or hormonal changes, but when they appear suddenly or in large numbers, especially alongside intense itching, it could suggest an underlying hormonal imbalance, such as elevated cortisol levels (as seen in conditions like Cushing’s syndrome) or rapid weight fluctuations.
Your height and weight place you in the overweight range, which can contribute to mechanical skin stretching and irritation, particularly if the skin barrier is compromised. The itching may also be worsened by dryness, allergies, or even conditions like eczema.
For treatment, I recommend that you start the following:
-
Fragrance-free, ceramide-based moisturizer (Hyaluronic acid) or Eucerin (mineral oil, petrolatum, and lanolin) applied generously at least twice daily to help restore the skin barrier.
-
Use a mild, soap-free cleanser to avoid further irritation.
-
For the stretch marks, early intervention with topical retinoids (if not pregnant), Hyaluronic acid, or products containing Centella Asiatica (Asiaticoside, Madecassoside, Asiatic acid, and Madecassic acid) may help improve their appearance. However, results will take time and consistent use.
-
If the itching is severe, a short course of a low-to-moderate potency topical steroid or oral antihistamines may be needed to reduce inflammation and discomfort.
However, considering the systemic nature of your symptoms, I strongly recommend undergoing evaluation for potential endocrine or metabolic causes through blood work and a physical examination, to ensure there are no deeper underlying issues.
I hope this has helped you.
Please feel free to reach out to me again if you have further queries.
Thank you.
