What causes small bumps on facial skin?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I shaved the night before and tried a new facial moisturizer all over my face, the next morning, and maybe six to eight hours later, I noticed my skin feeling slightly tight or irritated with the small bumps appearing out of nowhere. It is primarily all over my chin with a little around the mustache area. I have not noticed any difference after 24 hours and have only been putting my topical Clindamycin prescription on it. I recently had an infected pimple (not on my face), and the doctor recommended taking oral Clindamycin capsules. I took two doses and noticed the next day the pimple was gone. I know this is terrible practice but after that, I stopped the antibiotic as l will be traveling abroad tomorrow. I always have terrible Gl complications with antibiotics so, I did not want to deal with it. Is there any chance that these bumps could be associated with stopping the antibiotics? The time between the appearance of the bumps and my last dose was 48 hours. This appears to have been caused by the lotion because it occurred within six to eight hours after the application, but I am not sure because everything happened so suddenly. Also, not sure if it is related but my lips have felt a little more irritated and dry than usual, even though they do not look any visibly different. Could this be something separate and unrelated but not sure.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I would like to know if you have been taking Clindamycin alone or in combination with Tretinoin or Isotretinoin.

Also, this reaction could be a result of the new moisturizer that you applied and this could be an allergic reaction. Kindly stop using it. This could also be due to shaving as that leaves the skin irritated sometimes and may disrupt the skin barrier.

Also, I am suggesting some medication for oral use and application.

  1. Calamine lotion (in combination with aloe vera or coconut oil) is to be applied locally twice daily for five to seven days.

  2. Tablet Levocetrizine 5 mg (milligrams) once daily at bedtime (per oral with water) for three days.

Kindly follow up after three days. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him/her, and take the medicines with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Take care.
