My skin is itchy after wearing soiled socks. What causes it?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I went to the beach yesterday and accidentally left my socks on overnight. They may have had a small amount of sand in them, and this morning I noticed flat, red, itchy skin that stops at the line where my socks were.
There are no bumps, but the area is slightly warm to the touch. What could this be, and should I be concerned?
Kindly suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Based on your description of itchy, red, flat skin with slight warmth exactly where your socks were, it most likely points to irritant contact dermatitis or mild skin irritation from trapped moisture, sand, or friction.
The possible causes include:
Irritation from sand trapped under the socks overnight.
Irritation from salt left on the skin after being at the beach.
Irritation from sweat or moisture trapped under the socks.
Friction or pressure from the sock fabric.
Mild allergic reaction to laundry detergent or sock material.
The clear sock-line pattern supports the idea that the cause is localized to the area in contact with the socks. The care instructions include:
Remove the socks and gently wash the affected area with mild soap and water, then pat dry.
Avoid scratching to prevent further irritation or infection.
Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer or one percent hydrocortisone cream once or twice daily for a few days.
Keep the area clean and dry, and avoid wearing tight socks or shoes to help with the healing process.
Seek medical attention if the redness spreads, the warmth increases, or the itching worsens despite self-care. You should also see a doctor promptly if blisters, swelling, pus, or pain develop, as these can be signs of infection. If there is no improvement within five to seven days, get a proper evaluation to rule out other causes.
Your height and weight suggest a BMI (body mass index) of around 32, which falls into the class one obesity range. While this does not directly cause the current skin irritation, maintaining a healthy weight can help improve overall skin health and circulation. Keeping this in mind may be helpful for your long-term well-being.
I hope this information helps you.
