What are the chances of conception after copper IUD removal?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had a copper intrauterine device (IUD) removed recently and ovulated at the beginning of this month. I was engaged in unprotected sex throughout my fertile window. My last period was in the previous month (mid-month). I started using NuvaRing recently and am not taking any other medication. I am 27 years old. What are the odds of conception? Kindly guide.
Thank you in advance.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
In your situation, several factors affect the likelihood of conception:
-
Fertility post-IUD (intrauterine devices) removal: Typically, fertility returns promptly after removing a copper IUD. Since you had yours removed and engaged in unprotected sex during your fertile window, conception was possible if sperm met the egg.
-
Timing of intercourse: Unprotected sex during the fertile window, approximately five days before and including ovulation (a mature egg is released from the ovary) day, substantially increases the chance of conception (fertilization of an egg by sperm).
-
Age: At 27, the average monthly chance of conceiving is around 20 percent, with 85 to 90 percent conceiving within a year.
-
NuvaRing usage: If you begin NuvaRing (vaginal rings) immediately post-IUD removal, it typically becomes effective right away, eliminating the need for backup contraception. However, since you had unprotected sex during your fertile window before starting NuvaRing, it would not have affected those instances.
Considering these factors, I suggest that conception was possible during your fertile window, starting NuvaRing on the same day as IUD removal likely reduced the overall pregnancy chance after that.
I hope this helps.

Thank you.
