Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 33-year-old female suffering from a cold and cough, weighing 180.779 pounds. IUI was done 12 days ago. I have been suffering from a cough for 8 days.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
You had an IUI (intra-uterine insertion) about 12 days ago, and now you have had a cold and a cough for eight days. This is more likely a simple viral respiratory infection, not related to your IUI procedure or fertility treatment. These upper respiratory issues are quite common, and they do not usually affect implantation or pregnancy outcome.
Right now, I would focus on keeping yourself hydrated, resting well, and avoiding self-medicating with strong cough syrups unless cleared. The safest options in early pregnancy/possible conception are plain steam inhalation, saline nasal drops, warm fluids, and honey-ginger tea, among other measures.
The probable causes:
Common viral cold, mild throat, or airway irritation.
Investigations to be done:
• Basic blood count if fever develops or cough worsens.
• Chest X-ray only if symptoms become severe (but avoid unless absolutely required due to fertility stage).
Differential diagnosis:
• Allergic rhinitis with cough.
• Mild bronchitis.
• Gastric reflux-related cough.
Probable diagnosis:
Acute viral upper respiratory infection.
Treatment plan:
• Warm water, steam inhalation two to three times a day.
• Honey with lukewarm water for throat soothing (if not diabetic).
• Paracetamol 500 mg only if fever or body ache, safe in conception and pregnancy stage.
• Avoid strong antibiotics or cough syrups without a doctor’s clearance since the implantation stage is critical.
• If cough persists beyond two weeks or breathing difficulty develops, see a physician for further evaluation.
Regarding follow-up:
Please update me if you develop a fever, chest tightness, or worsening cough. Also, since you are around day 12 post-IUI, your pregnancy test will be due in a few days, so let me know the result. A follow-up here will help me guide you both for cough management and fertility care together.
Preventive measures:
• Keep yourself away from dust and cold exposure.
• Maintain good hydration and rest.
• Eat light, balanced food to support fertility outcomes.
• Avoid unnecessary over-the-counter medications in this two-week wait period.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
