What causes lower lip pull after double jaw surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I underwent double-jaw surgery and two chin surgeries. Now, I have an issue since my lower lip is being pulled to the right side. Initially, I thought the cause of such a pull was due to nerve damage. But, I have been told by several doctors that this has more to do with the bone being shaved off on the right side of the lower jaw and chin position being several inches off to the right side (asymmetric to position and direction of the jaws). I never got an official doctor’s note on this, but I would like to have it. I believe my lower lip being pulled to the right side has a tremendous negative impact on my face. If you could provide me with a doctor’s note on this issue based on the photos (I have quite a few of those, but attaching a couple this time), I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I believe the picture you have sent here is post-surgical (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity). Your face seems normal but due to surgery, you feel a right pull of the lower lip which is not noticeable. The centric line or say the alignment of the teeth is affected. Just visit the dentist who has treated you and also with the help of a cosmetic surgeon consult them about the proper exercises and ways to treat facial asymmetry. Consult an orthodontist (a dentist who can diagnose, prevent, and treat jaw and teeth irregularities) to align your teeth. Maybe you will get your facial symmetry back. They are not shifted more than 0.039 to 0.078 inches. This will be cured if you consult your dentist and also an orthodontist. This facial asymmetry can be corrected by aligning the teeth or the skull. Keep me updated with the improvements.

I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.
